Small Business Spotlight Feature: Dope Crochet

This week Small Business Spotlight Feature: Dope Crochet @DopeCrochet is a Fav of mine!!! Thank you Ericka for taking time out of your busy schedule ❤ Please take a few moments to get to know Ericka & Dope Crochet!!!

Q. What is your name and where are you from?
Ericka Barnes and I am from Austin, Texas

Q. Can you tell us a little about your company (name, what you offer, when established, etc)?
Dope Crochet, crocheted earrings and other accessories for women, and recently some mens items have been added to the collection. Established in 2011

Q.What was your inspiration behind starting the brand and for each design?
When I decided to go natural, I ended up with an afro that left it hard for me to find accessories that I liked to complement my new hair style so I just made my own. That was pretty much where it grew from.

Q. What distinguishes Dope Crochet from other brands?
The emphasis on the details flow through everything about the brand, from the styles of accessories and their crochet patterns, down to the packaging. No one does it this way.

Q. What challenges have you faced with starting the line?
Balancing graduate school, maintaining the relevancy of the brand, filling big orders all while being pregnant…life has been interesting to say the least but the challenges all have made me stronger.

Q. What personal goals would you like to accomplish with your business?
I think right now to see the brand being welcomed and appreciated by the people who these products are made for stand as a big accomplishment to me. I really like that Dope Crochet has become a lifestyle brand.

Q. Do you have any advice that you would offer to an aspiring entrepreneur?
Keep your brand healthy by always looking for ways to keep it new and improved. Always show your believers, customers/clients, that you appreciate and love them!

Q. And finally, how do we get our hands on Dope Crochet Jewelry? (and on Etsy), (Like US!), @DopeCrochet on twitter, Tumblr as well

Kynx Product Review

Kinks & Curlies I had the pleasure to review 4 products from the Kynx hair care line which were in the premier She Don’t Lye monthly subscription service.

I started off with the I am Natural softening cream cleanser. First of all it does contain sulfates which I’m not fond off but I wanted to do a complete review. Ironically, the cleanser did not leave my hair feeling striped. This is the softest my hair has ever felt and it truly cleansed my hair. I rinsed out the cleanser and proceeded to apply the

I am Strong silky kinks hydrating conditioner. Oh man! I love this conditioner!!!! My curls were popping. I’ve never seen curls defined like that when I apply a conditioner. And my hair was still soft. Once I rinsed out the conditioner, I applied my direct leave in conditioner from Cashmere Curls, my oil mix…then I began to style my hair in two strand twist with

I am Free miracle kink cream to damp hair (I posted the results Wednesday evening). I left the twist in all day Thursday. On Friday i applied a small amount of the i am Fierce refreshing leave in moisturizer and followed with my two strand twist out.

My final thoughts: I’ve been using the curly girl method for several weeks now and I really didn’t want to use the cleanser but I must say I do like it because it left my hair feeling baby soft. Also the product had a subtle scent. After cleansing and styling my hair was soft and moisturized. A little of this product goes a long way. I received 4 two ounce samples and I have plenty left to definitely use again. I give Kynx a 3 out of 4 only because of the product(s) containing sulfates. But I do recommend my type 4b/c Kinks to try this.

Q.  What was your inspiration behind starting the brand and for each design?
A.  When I was a young girl, I was heavily involved in revitalizing my neighborhood through gardening. Celebrating 30 Days of Im Just Jackie / Giveaway Winner

Peace Fam, back in February I ran my very firt giveaway!!! I wanted to let my fans/followers know how much I appreciated there support from day one. What better way than to have a giveaway. When I first started Im Just Jackie, I was reaching out to several businesses and friends to let them know what I was doing. One particular business owner responded and asked me if I would like to have a giveaway…I responded I’m not ready for that yet but when I am, you will be the first person I contact. So 30 days later I contacted Eugene, owner of “my black skin is…” and the rest is history.

The winner of the Celebrating 30 Days of Im Just Jackie was Jackie Milan. Who was gracious enough to post a picture wearing her prize “my blackskin is powerful” tee. Thanks Jackie, you look amazing!!!
